Copying CT/MRI discs: why preserve the complete DICOM dataset?

Understand the difference between copying the original dataset and exporting a few images for quick viewing.

When you need an additional CT or MRI disc, what matters is that the dataset remains complete and usable by the receiving facility. Copying a few images visible on a screen may not meet that need.

A dataset may contain several components

DICOM is a standard for representing and exchanging medical imaging information. In addition to images, data may include details about the examination and the patient. On storage media, DICOMDIR acts as a directory referencing files in the dataset.

When copying a set already exported by a healthcare facility, a careful approach is to preserve the files, names and source structure, including DICOMDIR when present. Do not rename, separate or modify components without understanding the consequences.

Quick-view images may not replace the original data

A screenshot or exported JPEG can be convenient for a quick look, but does not represent all the files and related information in the source dataset. If you are providing data to another healthcare facility, ask which dataset it needs before preparing the copy.

Format conversion is a separate request and should not happen silently during disc copying. The copying service preserves the source content within the agreed scope.

Check readability and completeness

Before making another copy, establish whether the source can be read or has errors. After copying, compare the file list, counts and sizes and check it with suitable tools. If any files cannot be read, clarify what is missing rather than treating the copy as complete.

A bundled image viewer may depend on the operating system and its terms of use. Copy it only where its licence permits; including a viewer on a disc does not guarantee that it will work on every computer.

Handle the data for the right person and purpose

Keep the original disc and confirm that the requester is authorised to supply the data. For an initial service enquiry, the disc type and required quantity are enough; agree separately on how to transfer the records.

A copy can help with preparing records, but a copying service does not interpret results or advise on treatment. The receiving healthcare professional or facility will confirm whether the data meets its needs.
