GUIDES
Do not throw away those old tapes just yet
Assess the condition of your tapes and prepare the details needed before digitisation.
Old tapes may hold unique family moments. Before trying to play them, look at the casing, label and visible tape to note their condition.
If you notice mould, deformation or signs of broken tape, leave it as it is and speak to someone with suitable equipment. Avoid opening the cassette yourself or playing it repeatedly as a test.
Photograph each tape and note the quantity and approximate running time, if known. After digitisation, keep the files in at least two locations and periodically check that they still open.
